In recent months, I have broken hundreds of images of the interface of Windows 7, for use in galleries here at ZDNet (like this and this), and Windows 7 Inside Out. However, static images do not do justice to some of the nuances of reality, using a function. So when the video production ZDNet crack team offered to help produce some screencasts, I seized the opportunity.

No doubt you've heard of Aero and Aero Snap Shake. Here is a chance to see these features in action.

I even remember the first time I saw this feature demonstrated for me. I was immediately impressed with the idea of mouse gestures could make it easier window management. This is especially important these days in 20 - and 24-inch monitors are very common.

In fact, after using Windows 7 for almost a full year, I must confess that I am spoiled by this feature, more than any other. When using a computer with another operating system, Windows Vista, XP or OS X, I really miss the ability to maximize and minimize a window with a mouse movement or break a window in the lateral position of the screen.

This is the first of four Windows 7 demos I've done in this series. Look for the next next week at this time.

Nortel Unveils ACE Release 2.0

Nortel has introduced version 2.0 of the Agile Communication Environment (ACE) is the next generation software platform to drive business flexibility and productivity. The use of ACE, communication, instant messaging, voice, video, location and existence can quickly open Web services interfaces. These functions can be easily combined with the business processes and tools, such as customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, global positioning systems or WiFi asset tracking, video surveillance, to create powerful new applications.

The company said version 2.0 also introduced, including the application does not rely on a desk for the VoIP network to provide high quality, but a single number access to employees of any type of mobile phone in any location. Internet Explorer 8 is faster than Firefox and Chrome

In a study comparing the display speed of IE 8, chrome and Firefox, Microsoft's browser first class. Conclusions that go against the tide of independent test carried out so far.

The comparison made by Microsoft will not fail to respond in the forums and blogs. To accompany the launch, this upcoming Internet Explorer 8, the publisher has measured the speed display browser compared to chrome and Firefox.

The tested versions of browser IE 8 competitors are - 1.0 for the chromium and 3.05 for Firefox.

Opera and safari were not selected because of their low market share on Windows systems, and Microsoft said.

IE 8 faster on 50% of sites tested-

Grounds of the inadequacy of online tools typically used to measure the performance of browsers, and especially those of the javascript engine, Microsoft has developed its own methodology and testing tools.

Google Chrome Web Browser Shines

No longer is a beta, Google’s Chrome Web browser a capable contender to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

However, the search company's browser not have some basic features found in IE, Firefox and Opera, and limits users who want to characterize settings and customize their browser. In spite of its shortcomings, browser users should give Google Chrome a try.

Just a few short months ago, Google surprised the Web world with the make public of the beta of Google Chrome, a new Web browser direct from the search massive itself.
So what does the launch of Google Chrome 1.0 mean for the Web browsing world and the Web in general? Well, the simple fact that it is from Google has a major impact, and should put the browser in a good place to fight with Microsoft and Mozilla for market share.

But what about the browser itself? From a severe usability standpoint, Google Chrome is one of the most attractive and instinctive browsers I have ever used, and is probably the most impressive first version of a browser ever. Once a user gets over some of the foibles and differences from other browser interfaces (such as tabs at the very top of the window and no file menus), Google Chrome quickly begins to feel like the right way to surf the Web.

Hopefully that post will help you any time you need computer repair related news, will get in that blog. Google Chrome also has some other nice touches, such as a hybrid search address bar and integration with Google Gears to provide desktop Web applications. However, not everything about Google Chrome shines brilliantly.

Microsoft preps to push IE 8; makes blocking tool available

As it has done with previous Internet Explorer (IE) releases, Microsoft has made available an IE 8 blocking toolkit to allow users to keep Microsoft’s browser from being downloaded automatically on their Windows machines.

In a January 6 posting to the Microsoft IE blog, company officials noted that Microsoft is planning to push the final IE 8 release via its Automatic Update (AU), Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update (MU) update systems. To keep the release from being pushed, customers can download the blocker toolkit from the Microsoft Download Center.

Unlike some previous versions of the toolkit, there is no expiration date on the latest blocker. The toolkit can be configured by running the registry file on client machines or via Group Policy, according to the IE 8 blog posting.

Once the final IE 8 bits are ready, Microsoft is planning to mark them as a top priority for distribution, officials said via the blog entry:
“The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the update will be listed as High Priority. Delivery of IE8 via AU will begin after we make IE8 available from the Microsoft Download Center. Of course, users can always decline to install IE8 through AU when it is offered.”

Microsoft hasn’t provided a final release target date for IE 8, other than to say some time in 2009. Late last year, company officials acknowledged Microsoft would not be releasing the final version of IE 8 before the end of calendar 2008, as some company officials had claimed previously. Instead, Microsoft is planning to distribute in the first quarter of 2009 one more public test release, Release Candidate 1, before it rolls out the final IE 8.

I’m not sure if we’ll see RC 1 of IE 8 this week. While Microsoft is expected to release the official version of Windows 7 Beta 1 to private and public testers over course of the next three days, the build of IE8 that is part of Windows 7 Beta 1 is still Beta 2, company officials said on January 7. (The refreshed partner test build of IE 8 that Microsoft released privately in December was designated as “RC1″ but isn’t the official RC1 release, the Softies have said.)
When I asked earlier this week, Microsoft officials wouldn’t comment on when IE 8 RC1 would go live.

Ace Explorer offers a lot for people looking to expand their Internet Explorer needs. Much like the Maxthon browser, it adds a lot of functionality for IE users. Having said this, I’m not convinced that I’m going to be switching back to Internet Explorer anytime soon.

Now this is not to say that looking into a browser overlay like this is a bad thing. Ace Explorer has done good things for people who are simply not interested in moving away from their preferred Internet Explorer, but I’m simply not convinced that dressing up Internet Explorer 6 is going to honestly be enough for most people. IE 7 perhaps, but not so much when considering IE 6's long list of problems and lack of solid updates.

Make sure:

The files (images) you are trying to download have exactly the same extensions as set in the task properties (check the Image is a option). If you're not sure what type images on a web site are, right-click one and select Properties. A window showing the type of the image appears.
The files are not discarded by a filter. The Log Window displays discarded files.
If you try to download images (files) from a web site that requires login (e.g. Yahoo! Groups or MSN Groups) make sure that either you created the task from the web browser or logged in on the Login tab.

If Picture Ace reports that it scanned a few web pages but found nothing you should open the main window, select the task in question and look through the Log Window. Usually the cause of the failure can be easily determined from the log records.

If the log records don't show anything useful or you just don't understand what these records are all about, just right-click the Log Window and selectCopy Log onto the Clipboard. Paste it to an e-mail message and send it to us. We will try to find out the cause of the failure ourselves and reply to you as soon as possible.

Note, that the button appears only on the Internet Explorer toolbar. If you use an IE-based browser (Avant Browser, MSN, MyIE2, etc.) you should use the tray icon instead.

To make the program's button appear on the Internet Explorer toolbar you may need to take additional steps. If the button is already on the toolbar there is no need to do anything.

1) Open the Web Browser Options dialog and check the Add the program button on the Internet Explorer toolbar option (if not checked yet). Click OK.

2) In case you are using Internet Explorer 6.x or higher you may need to enable Picture Ace add-ons first:

Start -> Control Panel-> Internet Options;
Switch to the Advanced tab;
Make sure the "Enable third-party browser extensions" options is enabled;
Switch to the Programs tab;
Click "Manage Add-ons";
Make sure the add-ons named "IADIEHelper class" and "Picture Ace" are enabled, click OK;
Click OK to close the Interent Options window.

3) Open Internet Explorer;

4) Select View -> Toolbars -> Customize... (Customize Toolbar dialog opens);

5) Locate and select the Picture Ace icon in the Available toolbar buttons list;

6) Click the Add-> button

7) Click the Close button. The program button is now on the Internet Explorer toolbar

Note - Ctrl/Alt + Click combinations work only with Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.
Please make sure that you have the Enable third-party browser extensions option enabled:
1.In Internet Explorer click the Tools menu and choose Internet Options;
2.Click the Advanced tab;
3.Scroll to the Browsing section, make sure Enable third-party browser extensions is checked;
4.Close all IE windows and open a new IE window.
Also, make sure no program blocks the Picture Ace BHO (Browser Helper Object).
If nothing of the stated above works, you would have to use another integration method - the IE context menu. Open the Web Browser Options dialog, uncheck the Method 1 option and check the Method 2 option, then restart Internet Explorer.

Do not download at all

Do not try to download the new file at all.

Download and rename

Download the new file, rename and save it.

Download and rename if the size is different

Download, rename and save the new file only if its size is different from the size of the existing file. Otherwise the file is not downloaded at all.

Always download and overwrite

The new file will always be downloaded and will overwrite the old file.

Download and overwrite if the size is different

Download the new file and overwrite the old file, but only if the new file has a different size than the old one. Otherwise the new file is not downloaded at all.

Keep original file name found on the web page
The file name is the same as on the web page, e.g. mypic.jpg, car.jpg, etc.

Generate numerical name
The file name is a number, e.g. 001.jpg, 002.jpg, etc.

Use current date + numerical name
The file name consists of the current date and a number, e.g. 14-05-2004-01.jpg, 14-05-2004-02.jpg, etc.

Prefix
The file name is prefixed with this string.

Start from
The first number in the file name.

Number of digits
A number of digits in the file name.
